Sustainable Seafood Commitment
Target is committed to the long-term sustainability of our ocean resources, which is why we're proud to announce that Target’s selection of fresh and frozen seafood will be sustainable and traceable, or in a credible, time-bound improvement process by the end of 2015.
Through a partnership with FishWise – a nonprofit organization designed to improve the sustainability and financial performance of seafood retailers, distributors and producers – we will achieve our commitment in a number of ways.
We will:
- Continue to engage suppliers to identify the most responsible seafood options
- Encourage source fisheries and farms to become certified
- Continue sourcing seafood products from third-party-certified fisheries and farms
- Engage with the appropriate government agencies, NGOs, industry groups and certification bodies to trace seafood from the supply chain to its source
“Target has shown itself to be a leader in sustainable seafood. This new and deeper commitment should both serve as an example for the rest of the industry and result in real change on the water.”

What We've Done
Target's seafood assortment is transitioning to include more products that are sourced sustainably and eliminate the ones that aren’t. We currently carry more than 50 Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)-certified or Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP)-certified fresh and frozen seafood products. And since 2010, we’ve stopped selling three species that are on the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch list.
-
Farmed Salmon
Target became the first major retailer to eliminate farmed salmon when we converted our entire salmon assortment to MSC-certified wild-caught Alaskan salmon.
-
Chilean Seabass
We no longer carry Chilean seabass, which is severely overfished by methods that harm seafloor habitat and seabirds.
-
Orange Roughy
We’ve also eliminated orange roughy, a species that’s vulnerable to overfishing because it grows slowly and reproduces late in life.
“Target has risen to the top of the Carting Away the Oceans rankings by embracing challenges that other retailers dismiss as impractical or impossible. The company's recent implementation of seafood standards that exclude the sale of any farmed salmon whatsoever sent shockwaves through the aquaculture industry.”
