Read a Message From Our CEO

Stores

  • If you’ve seen our Assets Protection (AP) personnel riding our mobile security vehicles in some of our store parking lots, you’ve already gotten a look at one of our safety resources: highly visible, uniformed team members who are always looking out for our guests and team members.

  • Other tools, like sophisticated surveillance systems, are less visible but just as effective. Target store teams think about safety every day, but we put special emphasis on planning during big events like the day after Thanksgiving, with detailed crowd management plans that ensure everyone stays safe and has fun.

National Night Out

Every year, Target partners with local public-safety agencies to host and participate in National Night Out (NNO) celebrations. As a national sponsor of NNO, we donated funding or supplies to support more than 15,000 local celebrations nationwide. These neighborhood gatherings not only spread the word that Target is committed to helping the community stay safe, they also help our neighbors get to know their Target teams and public-safety officers.

Attendance was record-breaking in 2011. Citizens, law-enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from around the world came out to celebrate. In all, more than 37 million people – including more than 10,000 Target team members – participated in NNO.

We want people to know that police officers are approachable, and Target is all about being fun, approachable and involved in our community. That makes them a great fit as our National Night Out partner.

Safe Stores and Parking Lots

Target knows that smart store designs can help minimize theft and fraud risks and ensure guest and team member safety.

From team members to technology, Target stores leverage a multifaceted approach to security, including Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED). This strategy incorporates exterior and interior store design elements to mitigate crime and protect guests and team members.

Although we can’t prevent all crime from occurring on our property, our teams can design stores that both meet guests’ shopping needs and help keep our communities safe. Many of our store designs include the following elements to increase safety:

Outside:

  • Surveillance camera systems
  • Mobile security vehicles such as energy-efficient Segways
  • Strategic parking lot lighting and landscaping help prevent crime by increasing visibility.

Inside:

  • Surveillance camera systems
  • Restrooms are located in highly visible areas so Target team members can monitor activity around them.
  • Limited backroom access ensures our team members are protected from potential security risks.
